Paralegal Education: A Pathway to a Life-Long Career

In these tough economic times, many people are interested in pursuing a new career field, one that provides some stability during difficult times. For many this means returning to school to pursue additional education in order to be competitive in a difficult job marketplace.  One area that merits consideration is the legal field, more specifically the paralegal profession.  Paralegal education can be a pathway to a career that provides steady income as well as personal satisfaction.

Paralegal education is a relatively new field; the profession actually did not receive recognition until the latter part of the 1960’s. Prior to this, all legal research and services had to be performed by sanctioned members of a state’s bar association. Some freelancers began to offer assistance to attorney’s on the myriad of daily legal tasks and out of this came the first paralegal professionals.  In today’s fast-paced world, a law firm could not exist without the services of paralegal professionals.

Today there are literally hundreds of thousands of paralegals practicing in the United States.  They work hand in hand with attorneys to prepare for trials and hearings and are invaluable in providing the legal research so critical to the field. The majority of those in the profession work for private firms however, there are also opportunities in government as well as corporations’ legal departments. This profession continues to experience growth, even during difficult times in the employment marketplace.

In the United States, there are ample opportunities to pursue paralegal education with over 600 educational programs available.  These educational opportunities run the gamut from certificate programs all of the way to master’s degrees. For those interested in pursuing education in this field, it is a wise choice to consider the educational opportunities approved by the American Bar Association.

Those considering paralegal education are wise to use the Internet to research the various programs that are available.  While there are many offerings available, those who are serious about the paralegal profession will want to seek out educational opportunities sanctioned by the American Bar Association.  There are both traditional training programs offered by colleges and specialty schools as well as a variety of online opportunities. This a wide open field for those with a curious mind and an interest in our justice system.
